In addition to programs on first Mondays,
members get together on most third Mondays
for Open Mike. Led by Norm Levy, participants
can read up to five minutes of their own work
for others to discuss and give positive
feedback. Open Mike is held at the Heritage
Library at 7:00 p.m. The next Open Mike will
be on Monday, October 21.
This creative website allows authors to finish
their thoughts, unlike TV programs where
guests constantly talk over each other. All
writers--amateur or professional--are invited
invited to post their articles. The site can
also be used to promote new literary works
and you can actually post a cover graphic
with a link for each of your publications.

the Island Writers’ Network’s has released its second anthology, Hilton Headings.
Pieces depict the diversity of Island Writers’ Network members and offer an assortment of fiction, memoir, humor, and poetry. In addition to literary works, Hilton Headings contains eight pages of color photographs of the Lowcountry and its flora and fauna. A stunning photograph of a Lowcountry dock is featured on the cover.

The Beaufort ProWriters meet at Common
Grounds in downtown Beaufort, typically
on second Tuesdays. There is no charge for
ProWriters meetings, which are open to

At the May 2nd meeting, Norm Levy social
media to sell books.
The April 4th meeting featured Sansing
McPherson, who provided an excellent
overview of how to write dialog.
Tom Crawford presented the March 7th
program. Tom related his experiences in
self-publishing his book Foibles.
At the February 7th meeting, Sheila Gale
discussed her experiences in getting her
mystery, Dottie Flowers and the Skinner
Gang, published.
At the March 5th meeting, Lynda Bouchard,
an author concierge and publicist, talked
about marketing and PR.
IWN member Sheila Gale's mystery, Dottie Flowers and the Skinner
Gang, was released in July by Crystal Dreams Publishing, an imprint
of Multi-Media Publications . Sheila's book launch was held July
26th in Canada. Thes book is available at Amazon.com in hardcopy
and for Kindle. Sheila has completed a second book which will be
published soon, and she is working on a third.
The Island Writers' Network meets first
Mondays, September through May, at the
Heritage Library, located on the 2nd floor of
The Savannah Bank Building, 852 William
Hilton Parkway, on the right side of the SB
lanes of Highway 278, just past Ronnie's
Bakery and the Red Roof Inn. Meetings are
at 7:00 pm. The next meeting will be on
October 7.
Norm, who has been writing light verse for decades, now has a blog
which provides samples of poems included in his book, Rhymes for
Our Times, as well as some new poems. Norm is now actively writing
two-liners which appear on his Twitter page. He now has more than
a thousand "followers."
Norm has appeared on several radio shows recently, most recently on
NPR's "On Point" broadcast. (Norm's segment is about 26 minutes into
the show).

David Lauderdale's' interview with Norm Levy about Norm's experiences with social networking to
market books appeared in The Island Packet. Norm was also interviewed on BlogTalkRadio where
he described his background in advertising and marketing as well as his book Rhymes for our
Times. The interviewer commented that Norm's book was one of the "funniest books I've ever
read," and described the content as "priceless material." Norm also managed to get in a plug for
the Island Writers' Network.
Want to upload your novel to be available for
sales on Amazon Kindle? The first attempt
can be a little daunting, but it is really not
difficult by following these instructions.
These instructions are intended for a simple
novel; manuscripts with graphics and custom
formatting may require a professional.
Appropriate formatting of the Word ms prior
to uploading for Kindle is critical for a
readable e-Reader product. CJ Lyons has
prepared an excellent video, which explains
many fo the formatting issues.
At the October 3, 2011 meeting, Tim
Johnston presented a program on Short Story
America.The first fall meeting was on
September 12 when Barbara Carnal presented
a proposal for a teaching outreach program at
Palm Key.

The Island Writers' Network released a new anthology
December 7th at the Coastal Discovery Museum's annual
Lowcountry Holiday Happening. The book will also be available
Hilton Head Island: Living the Dream is the third in a series of
anthologies published by the Island Writers Network, offering
readers a selection of tales, poems and art by the creative
authors and artists who live, play, work and retire in this
special place.

Moss Creek Plantation hosted a luncheon featuring Lee Child, author of the popular "Jack
Reacher" books. Several IWN members attended the event. The first Reacher film, starring Tom
Cruise, opened in December.
The 2012 Savannah Children’s Book Festival was held November 10, 2012, in Forsyth Park in
Savannah. The festival was presented by Live Oak Public Libraries and the City of Savannah. The
ninth annual festival celebrated the joy of reading, the power of the written word, and the magic
of storytelling with children’s book authors and illustrators from around the country.
Children of Shadows is the
saga of Cooper Hamilton,
a white youngster, and
Twilight, the mystical
Gullah girl who raises him.
Later, returning to his
Lowcountry roots, he
stumbles upon a
mur-derous plot to
disinherit Twilight's people.
The sixth annual Savannah Book FestivalFestival took place February 14-17, 2013, in Telfair Squar
and in Trustees Theater. Featured authors included Dave Barry, David Baldacci, Al Gore, James
Patterson, and Hoda Kotb, along with many other national and local authors. Grammy award
winning Gregg Allman also attended. His memoir My Cross to Bear made Publishers Weekly’s Best
Nonfiction Books of 2012.
The speaker at the October, 2010, meeting
was Jim Jordan, author of Savannah Grey.
At the September 13th, 2010, meeting, C. J.
Lyons, author of several best-selling medical
mysteries, provided an excellent handout, her
Writers' Query Toolkit.
The program for the June, 2010 meeting was
an exercise in producing attention-getting
beginnings for literary pieces. Participants
were reminded to refer to the excellent
advice offered by Al Chaput at a previous
meeting: "The First 500 Words."
IWN member James Edward Alexander had a delightful piece published in The Island Packet on
Sunday, August 11th. In "Drafted" James Edward gives a humorous account of accommodation
problems for visiting black athletic teams in the 1930s in the segregated South.
